A rogaine runs well out of mobile range, where anything that needs the internet stops working. On the day, one device runs as the hub and makes its own network, and every phone joins it. Everyone is looking at the same live plan, with no reception at all.

The hub

Any device can be the hub.

It's usually the organiser's laptop, but it doesn't have to be. A phone can host the network just as well, so if there's no laptop at the start, someone's phone runs the day instead. The hub doesn't even need the plan to begin with. It fills up from whichever device already has it, and every other device joins and stays in step.

Before you leave

Load the event while you still have signal.

Before you drive out of range, open the event on the hub and it pulls the whole thing down from the cloud: the plan, the course, the water points, and everyone helping run it. Any phone that opens it while there's still signal gets its own full copy too. By the time you reach the start the event is spread across every device, and none of it needs the internet from there.

No single point of failure

The hub runs the network, but it isn't the only copy of the plan. Every phone holds the whole thing, so if the hub goes flat nothing is lost. When any phone gets signal it catches the cloud up on what happened out here and pulls down anything new, then shares that with the hub and every other phone. A change made anywhere reaches everyone.

Why it matters

You need the plan most where there's no reception.

Water checks, safety drives, which controls are still out: this is the information the day actually turns on, and it's needed exactly where there's no signal. Keeping it on the hub at base and letting phones read it off the hub's own network means the crew reads the live plan straight off their phones in the field.
